Some companies have elaborate flavor charts. We have a rooster with a sliding scale of questionable confidence.
The Saucy Rub-O-Meter is our lighthearted way of measuring backyard attitude. Drag the slider on the homepage and see how saucy Richard thinks you’re feeling today. It is absolutely not a scientifically validated test, and it does not tell you how hot any particular sauce or rub will taste.
The four levels of Richard
1–24: Nice and Easy
The grill is clean. The tongs are lined up. You’ve got a simple menu and plenty of napkins. Richard approves, though he privately thinks you need more drama.
25–59: Getting Saucy
You’re trying a new rub, inviting another couple over, and considering whether the potatoes deserve their own spice blend. Things are getting interesting without getting out of hand.
60–84: Hot & Heavy
The smoker is going, the kitchen counter has become a prep station, and the neighbors can smell dinner. There’s a lot happening, and you’d better have a second thermometer battery.
85–100: Cluck Around & Find Out
Richard has apparently decided to make the entire afternoon an event. The only wise response is to keep food safety, clean utensils, and the fire extinguisher completely separate from his personality choices.
What the meter doesn’t mean
It doesn’t measure capsaicin, Scoville heat units, seasoning intensity, food safety, or the difficulty of a recipe. A person who selects 99 isn’t being told to add more cayenne to dinner. A person who selects 10 isn’t being told their food is bland.
Those things are matters of personal taste, the actual ingredients in a product, and how you cook. A joke on a website shouldn’t make those distinctions harder to understand.
How to use it
Head to the homepage, drag the slider, laugh at the description, and send it to the person in your family who always claims their grill setup is perfect. Then go back to the real business of figuring out what you’re making for dinner.
That’s what the Raunchy Rooster brand is supposed to do: give you some genuine cooking help with a healthy dose of personality.
